We have had a wild pony here for 30 years, she has a phobia of humans and she has never had a blacksmith touch her feet. We put a large area of stone in her field  which she has to cross to get water, she does her own manicure natures way, Her feet are good, sometimes we need find a natural alternative to the problem

To add to the above. If you have donkeys you should put an area of sand and gravel to help maintain their feet.
